Breeds falling into the terrier group are usually vermin hunters, with a high proportion of them originating in Britain. In 1677, the terriers known then were divided into two groups, those that were short-haired and crook-legged that would take to ground well, and the long-legged, shaggy sort which would hunt above ground. Suffice to say that some of the substantially taller of the terrier breeds today would certainly find it difficult to go to ground in the true sense of the term.
The following breeds are all recognised by the English Kennel Club and listed under the Terrier Group.
