Neutering
  • Both male and female dogs can be neutered after the age of six months.
  • In the male this is called castration, in the female, speying.
  • These operations do not only prevent unwanted pregnancies, but they have several health benefits too.
  • Neutering males will remove the possibility of testicular tumours, prostate problems and anal adenomas.
  • Neutering females can reduce mammary gland problems and prevent serious uterine infections in later life.
  • Neutering will not prevent your pet from being its normal happy self, in fact in some cases it can reduce any aggressive behaviour. This will not offer an immediate cure of aggressive tendencies, this may need to be done in conjunction with behavioural classes.
  • In males it may reduce the tendancy to wander off.
  • It is not necessary for females to have their first season beforehand, but she will need to be checked by the vet first in order to make sure she is physically mature enough.
  • Weigh up all the pros and cons of breeding from a pet carefully beforehand, as if it does not go according to plan it will be time consuming and expensive.
  • Talk to your vet in relation to any questions you may have with neutering, they will always be happy to help.
